JOINT BASE ANDREWS

(formerly Andrews Air Force Base)

In 2009, Andrews Air Force Base and Naval Air Facility Washington joined to establish Joint Base Andrews. It is situated in Prince George's County, Maryland, just to the east of Washington, D.C. The distance between Joint Base Andrews and the state of Virginia is 15 miles, or around 10 miles from Washington, DC. There are four nearby cities: Clinton, Upper Marlboro, Forestville, and the Town of Morningside.

The President's aircraft, Air Force One, is based in Andrews. The 316th Wing serves as the host squadron at Joint Base Andrews, but several other units are stationed there as well. The facility sponsors the Andrews Air and Space Expo, a significant event that draws guests from neighboring states, every two years.

Off Base Housing:

If military families want to live off base, there are many areas close by that require little travel time. From small towns to cities, there are a range of housing types and community dynamics.

On Base Housing:

AMC East Communities LLC is in charge of running Liberty Park at Andrews. All ranks are served by the installation's 13 neighborhoods. There are many different floor plans available, including some duplexes and single family homes with two to four bedrooms. There are 13 playgrounds, one outdoor swimming pool, and numerous sports courts throughout the base housing districts. The clubhouse has a kids' room and a workout area that is open 24/7.

Schools:

Three public schools—an elementary, a middle, and a high school—are located close to Joint Base Andrews, mostly in Clinton. Additionally, there is a K–4 public charter school located on the installation by the name of Imagine Andrews Public Charter School, which was created to meet the unique needs of military children residing on JB Andrews.

Cost of Living and BAH:

The cost of living can be quite high at Joint Base Andrews because it is located in the Washington Capital District. There are some affordable possibilities in Prince George's County, though, because of the variety of areas there. BAH for enlisted personnel at Joint Base Andrews runs from $2,061 to $3,225. Officers' BAH at Joint Base Andrews ranges from $2,691 to $3,600.

Housing Costs:

The average home price near Joint Base Andrews is $400,000, with home prices increasing the closer you move toward the D.C. area. The price per square foot can be anywhere from $200 to over $500 per square foot

Weather:

With a sprinkling of spring and fall, the East Coast primarily experiences the two seasons of winter and summer. Summers that are hot and muggy will keep you at the pool or beach. You should prepare for snowstorms by packing a shovel and buying high-quality snow clothing for the entire family. The good news is that you are in an ideal spot to take in a breathtaking East Coast fall and some of the area's most picturesque leaf-changing seasons!

BX: The JB Andrews Exchange is open everyday from 9 AM to 7 PM

Commissary: The commissary on board JB Andrews is open every day from Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 8 AM.

Hospital/Clinic:

Family Health, Flight Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pentagon Flight Medicine are all part of Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center.

Food and Drink:

Welcome to the home of blue crabs and crab feasts! Although learning how to eat crabs can be scary, it is a component of Maryland's summertime social scene. Restaurants offer crab in a variety of dishes, including crab cakes, crab dip, and crab soup (which comes in either a vegetable base or a creamy version.)

JB Andrews is also close enough to Washington, D.C., so you can splurge on any exotic food or upscale specialty you like.

Area Attractions

Military families are just 10 miles away from some of Washington, DC's top attractions, such as the Smithsonian Institute of Natural History, the National Arboretum, and other national landmarks along the National Mall, thanks to JB Andrews' proximity to the capital city. The White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the National Air & Space Museum are all located in the nation's capital. You can discover the Airmen Memorial Museum closer to the base. Additionally, there are lots of local options for military families looking for fun things to do on the weekends!

32 miles and an hour's journey will get you to Annapolis, Maryland, which has the Naval Academy and a lovely town. St. Michael's, Maryland: 79 miles; 1.5-hour travel; the Eastern Shore of Maryland has unmatched crabs and beautiful water vistas! Richmond, Virginia, the state capital of Virginia, is 108 miles away and takes two hours to go there. What can we say about the 121-mile, 2.5-hour drive to Lewes/Rehoboth Beach in Delaware? The beach is here! Bring some lotion and a bathing suit, then relax. Skyline Trip is the only public route that passes through Shenandoah National Park. It is a three-hour drive from Washington, D.C., to Luray Caverns in Virginia, which is 120 miles away. The greatest network of caverns in the east is located close by at Luray Caverns. A day excursion is worthwhile to explore this sinister underground realm of stalactites and stalagmites. Hershey (130 miles), Gettysburg (84 miles), and Lancaster (120 Miles) Pennsylvania: Within three hours of the metro region are three distinctive Pennsylvania cities. In Gettysburg, relive the Civil War, discover Milton Hersey's extraordinary tale, and spend time with the Amish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 3.5 hours to travel 170 miles to Chincoteague Island in Virginia. On the more tranquil side of the Eastern Shore, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a must-see for pony watching.
